One of the most common questions people have about purchasing a new sofa is:  how will it hold up to my pets? -  The fur, the claws, the stains, and drool: all of the gloriousness that comes along with the most adored members of the family. We are here to guide you and make sensible recommendations for your project.

"Animal proof" fabrics do not exist. However, there are certain products that will be a lot easier to take care of if your pet spends time with you on the sofa.   Look for very tightly woven upholsteries that have uncomplicated textures.  Cats especially like to play with nubby textures and thick chenille.  Fragile fabrics such as velvet, silk, linen, or wool should be avoided (or maybe saved for the decorative pillows or an accent piece that doesn’t get as much daily action).  Indoor performance fabrics like Sunbrella and Inside Out have been introduced throughout the furniture industry.  They are an excellent choice and will lend you more peace of mind.  Microfiber fabrics are also great because of their smooth flat texture.  We have heard from several cat owners who swear by the ease of microfiber.  Slipcovers made from a soft denim or canvas are another great solution because you can remove them and have them laundered, in some cases right in your own washing machine!

The material that rises to the top of the list for ease of care with pets is leather.  Leather can be quickly wiped down.  Fur does not cling to its’ surface and it also can take more of a beating in general.  There are certain leathers that will show a desired patina of markings over time allowing you to embrace the scratches.  (Try to keep those pet nails nice and trimmed to avoid punctures through the hide.)

With any upholstery, we recommend frequent vacuuming and cushion rotation to keep it looking its best for as long as possible.  Watch out for areas of direct sunlight and keep a cozy blanket over the spots that your furry friends prefer to sit, then throw it in the closet when company comes over.  They’ll never know!

Enjoy your pets and your beautiful furniture at the same time!
